A periodical is a publication that is repeated at least twice a year. After the first newspapers (the first is thought to have been published in Strasbourg in 1609), we have witnessed a huge development of periodicals, especially since the nineteenth century, with the industrialization of printing processes.
On Maremagnum you can find almost everything, from the single issue to entire collections for all types of magazines, ancient and modern.
Periodicals, by their nature, have always been printed into a higher number of copies than books: yet it is much rarer to find a complete collection of journals, because journals have been more easily destroyed or have been dispersed.
