Description

Incisione in rame, colorata d'epoca, mm 630x1390. Copperplate, original colour, mm 630x1390. Quite scarce and important large map in three sheets from the last editions of "Atlas novus" and "Grosser Atlas". It shows the Russian Empire under Catherine the Great and is based upon a 3-sheet map of similar size, engraved in St. Petersburg by K. Frolov, E. Khudiakov, and N. Zubkov in 1776 after teh 23-sheets survey by Trescot and Schmidt. Scale cartouche is decorated with a rocky cliff and an obelisk. A vignette in the bottom right depicts mythical figures looking over a map of the Empire with a city view in background. Seutter, after having worked with Homann in Nuremberg, opened his own activity in Augsburg around 1720. His maps always have elaborate cartouches and are very decorative and printed on good paper. Lotter married Seutter's daughter in 1740 and succeeded him in 1756. Lotter run then the business using mostly Seutter's plates but adding some new ones also.
