Tolkien. The Father of High Fantasy

Lords_of_ring

J. R. R. Tolkien, was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor who is best known as the author of the classic high-fantasy works TheHobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion.

While many other authors had published works of fantasy before Tolkien the great success of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings led directly to a resurgence of the genre. This has caused Tolkien to be popularly identified as the "father" of modern fantasy literature.

Tolkien once described The Lord of the Rings to his friendas "a fundamentally religious and Catholic work, unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision." Many theological themes underlie the narrative, including the battle of good versus evil, the triumph of humility over pride, and the activity of grace, as seen with Frodo's pity toward Gollum. In addition the epic includes the themes of death and immortality, mercy and pity, resurrection, salvation, repentance, self-sacrifice, free will, justice, fellowship, authority and healing.

Tolkien was heavily influenced also by Nordic mythology. During his education at King Edward's School in Birmingham, the then young Tolkien read and translated from the Old Norse on his own time.

Read more
