The Biblioteca Romantica
The Biblioteca Romantica is a series of Mondadori books
created in 1931, but whose project had already been in the pipeline for a few
years. The series has a list of 50 titles and can be considered a testimony of
what is commonly called "project publishing": a series that is born
and ends with a defined number of volumes. The first title of the series is La Certosa di Parma by Stendhal. The
idea is to publish the volumes in a very short period of time: 4-5 years and a
promise is made to subscribers: the edition, which is the telata, valuable, with
India paper, and which bears the golden friezes and everything, can be
purchased by those who wish with an initial subscription or by paying in
installments. There is a second economic version with a paperback cover. The 50
titles, compared to the initial project, will vary, but the idea of ensuring
the fruition to the Italian public of novels in excellent translations will be
respected, guaranteeing the translation from the original edition. The curator
of the series, Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, in the note to the first volume,
explains the name of the series: "By romantic works we mean historically
works of Christian and modern literature, 'romantic', as the name itself says,
is what was born from the legacy of Rome. Greater importance is given to the
nineteenth century, to get to the contemporary we would have to wait, and not
much, the birth of the "Medusa".
