Making her debut a century ago, in 1916, Georgia O’Keeffe was
immediately recognised as a trailblazing artist, while today her legacy as an
American art icon , “Mother of American modernism” and a pioneer of
twentieth-century art is widely recognised.
However, since the early 1920s the vast oil works have been dogged by
erotic interpretations and, despite O’Keeffe’s six decades of vigorous denial
that her paintings were in any way sexual, it remains a commonly held
assumption to this day.
Fascinated by art and encouraged by her family, Georgia made her
entrance in the world of arts. O’Keeffe mailed a few
of her drawings to Anita Pollitzer, a friend and former classmate at
Columbia University, who showed the work to Stieglitz, the influential art
dealer. A year later, she moved to New York, and Stieglitz found a place
for her to live and work. He also provided financial support for her to
focus on her art. Realizing their deep connection, the artists fell in love and
began an affair. Stieglitz and his wife divorced, and he and O'Keeffe married
in 1924.
As an artist, Stieglitz, who was 23 years older than
O'Keeffe, found in her a muse, taking over 300 photographs of her, including
both portraits and nudes. As an art dealer, he championed her work and promoted
her career. Inspired by the vibrancy of the modern art movement, she began to
experiment with perspective, painting larger-scale close-ups of flowers, the
first of which was Petunia No. 2, which was exhibited in 1925, followed
by works such as Black Iris (1926) and Oriental Poppies (1928).
